Literature Review

Biodiesel obtained from wasted oil

As fossil fuel is running out, we have to find an alternative source of fuel.
According to research, there are many ways to convert  things into biofuel, such as algae, wood chips, and wasted vegetable oil being the most accessible. It is so simple that biodiesel can be home prepared. Biodiesel can be used in diesel-fueled vehicles without any modification of the engine(Robert Kalb, 2010).

Although biofuel is slightly more environmentally friendly as it is recycled, reused and renewed oil, the process in making it is more complicated than conventional WVOs. The use of methanol and ethanol is needed to make this conversion possible. Bioethanol can now be obtained from genetically modified tobacco plants, according to the article in this link[http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/04/140414092002.htm].

It has been researched that biodiesel cuts down the amount of diesel a vehicle needs.Biodiesel is $16,540 cheaper over the course of ten years and WVO is $19,788 cheaper over the same amount of time( Robert Kalb, 2010)

Background Research

Wasted oil into biofuel

Is it possible?
Yes it is. According to a research done by people in 2005, wasted oil , heated to a certain temperature to that of diesel can be used to power cars. Biofuel causes the vehicle’s engine to be more efficient, and also reduces carbon emissions from the car. The production of biofuel is possible, could be due to the effects of frying.
The wasted vegetable oil, unusable for consumption, is heated and mixed with methanol. The product of it was biofuel.

Besides using wasted oil to produce biofuel, it can also be turned into soap.

What is science? What is scientific method?

Scientific method: Hypothesis, Observation and Conclusion
Science: Parts coming together to perform a function

What is Science? : According to a research paper, science is a methodical approach to studying the natural world. Questions asked are solved via observation, experimentation and interpretation through logic. It is also the determination of what is mostly like to be correct at current time with evidence.

What is scientific method? : It is a form of critical thinking that be will be subjected to review. It may include certain numbers of steps to perform before arriving at a conculsion

1)Science is a tool that we can use to prove something that we cannot understand.People are very willing to change their perspectives or knowledge when they know new discovery.
2)Scientific methods:
There are purpose, research, hypothesis, experiment, analysis and conclusion in the scientific methods.
We have to follow these methods to get right conclusion.

Shirley:  What is Science ?
According to google, science is the intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behaviour of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment. To many of us students, science is a subject we take that allow us to know how and why things happens, how things are made and the scientific reasons behind many things.

What is the Scientific Method?

Scientific Method are ways equipped with steps to solve a problem.

Research question

Biodiesel form used oil

We plan to use used oil to generate biofuel that can be used by vehicles.
If it works, we think that it can be an alternative to replace gasoline.

Scientific equipment:a pot(plastic),a stirrer,chemicals(lye and methanol),a container(air tight),2L of oil,a thermometer and filter paper etc...
